Description
Benefit is the third studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released 20 April 1970. The album was recorded at Morgan Studios, London. The band experimented with more advanced recording techniques there like reverse recording (flute and piano tracks on “With You There to Help Me”) and manipulating the tape speed (guitar on “Play In Time”).
Frontman Ian Anderson, composing all the songs, said that Benefit was a “guitar riff” album similar to groups like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin were recording. He also noted that the album is “rather dark and stark” along with being “an evolution in terms of the band playing as a band”.
Benefit received mixed review by critics and did much better on the charts in Europe. It topped at #11 on the US Billboard 200. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the album Gold, 500,000 sold.
